ÉTUDES SPRING/SUMMER '14

3.05.2014

Is it really spring yet? No? Ok, cool, didn't think so. Let's pretend it is, though, with some of my favorite looks from Études Spring/Summer '14. Sandals and big hats and...translucent macs? Ok! Sign me up.

We Need to Talk About Jumpsuits

8.12.2013

Because I just bought one and it is totally boner-inducing. These are a few I've seen and pinned that are a really good jumping off point if you're in the market (for inspiration.)

01 Balmain. Rousteing did a few more in a racecar-driver-y style, but I don't think those are as wearable as this denim number. Love it with the striped tee!
02 Hermès. Christophe Lemaire showed a sexy, modern, and totally chic jumpsuit for SS14 and I'm happy to say that the one I picked up bears a strong resemblance to this baby. Sort of like its cousin...a cousin who's maybe in a chain gang...but it's like whatever.
03 Tommy Ton shot this guy and I just loooove the look.

Mine is vintage, duh, and is pretty versatile—just like me!

UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE #FTW

7.03.2013

Christophe Lemaire SS14. It's so good I could throw myself out of this building.

I caught this on my lunch break at work yesterday and was in raptures. The styling is so so good, so clean and pared down so it's just about PLEATS and meduses (French for jellies) -inspired sandals and subtle gradations in color and THAT BED is killing me. It's like if Japan and Sweden had a baby and that baby was a lookbook, this is that lookbook baby. Capiche?

Anyway, the pleated high-waisted pant/short-sleeve shirt combo here feels like a more retro (and possibly more French?) take on the silhouette we saw at Assembly last season (look 26, to be exact.) That's pretty much my favorite silhouette right now...or always. And I love that all of this would mix well with my favorites at Marni (and the belts and even the pleats bring to mind one of the looks I loved at Theyskens' Theory, natch.) Oh, also, I quoted the balls out of Lemaire in this essay. Check it out.

IS THE LOOK: MARNI SS14

6.25.2013

I haven't been paying particularly close attention to the menswear shows this season. The most discussed collections inevitably wind up in front of me one way or another, on Tumblr or Facebook, or as tweeted links. But last night I popped over to Style.com to peruse their designer roster and realized I hadn't seen Marni.

I'm kind of a Marni obsessive (for men and women—shoppable on Net-a-Porter and Mr. Porter) and a collection like this is a big part of the reason why. It's conceptual yet applicable; it looks forward while glancing back at a sort-of late-sixties mod retro-futurism. You know? It feels immediately relevant and is more about "style" than "fashion", so you could easily DIY a similar thing or get clever at a thrift store and reverse-engineer the look. A half-tucked dress shirt buttoned all the way up? An apron-front skort thing? And can I get a #fuckyeahbirkenstocks? I could totally wear this right now...and forever, basically.

Photoshop filters are the wurst, but I think the "Crosshatch" effect I used here actually kinda helps in this instance. Maybe? The models are standing on a background by Jacqueline Colley—do yourself a favor and click through to check out her amazeballs body of work. She also has a great Tumblr. Which collections have been your favorites so far? Are you trolling Style.com every day?
