Double Denim for Fall

Get your best seamen jokes ready, y'all, because today I'm dressed like a fisherman! Well, at least like I'm about to spend some quality time off the Maine coast. Either way, I'm ready to talk seriously about denim, specifically a double dosage of denim and how to wear it for fall.

Even more specifically, we're talking about vintage Levi's, because that's all I'm wearing. I love the wash on this pair, which I picked up from Low when I visited my 'rents in Charlottesville over the summer. #SmallTownBlues #FTW. The wide leg has been really divisive—some people people are ambivalent about it while others think it's downright unflattering. To be honest, from certain angles this pair can look a bit dad jean-y, to which I say: #YOLO. According to this handy-dandy guide to shopping for vintage denim jackets, mine is most likely from the 60's; it came into my life via some selective rummaging at L Train Vintage. The sweater and shoes are vintage and the scarf is from J.Crew.

I have to say, as infrequently as I buy jeans, denim has a special place in my heart. It just ages so well! My oldest pair is an Acne Mic rigid from...2006? (Last seen here.) I've had them patched up so many times by now and still the seat is wearing out, but I can't bring myself to get rid of them.

YOU NEED TO KNOW: LENA EMERY

German photographer Lena Emery got a good bit of attention last month when her food still lifes for the Black Isle Bakery appeared in The Gourmand. I, however, discovered her work when I stumbled across the Autumn/Winter '13 campaign of designer Julie Eilenberger. Emery's brilliant way with composition and color is evident no matter her subject, so I'm pretty much obsessed.

[STREET STYLE] HANNE GABY

Mac and I ran into Hanne Gaby on Saturday and I was all like, "Hey girl, how've you been since I last saw you in a Whole Foods and tried to secretly Instagram you in the produce aisle?" And she was all like, "What?" and then I took her picture. Ok, so that exchange didn't really happen, but I have seen Odiele in a Whole Foods—and Anja Rubik once, come to think of it. Anyway, she did mention she's wearing Comme Des Garçons—how sick is that coat?? Ugh, and that bag! Also, later that day, Daria rode by me on a bike, so I was kind of living the dream.

SEASONAL #SELFIE-SPIRATION

As the temperature drops my style diverges down two very different paths: slutty cheerleader and secretly hot nerd. Just kidding! That was some "Halloween humor" for ya, because apparently I'm going as Not Another Teen Movie? Anyway, the first example of my day-to-day style, as seen above, is more streamlined, kind of Raf Simons-y on a budget-y. The look is Uniqlo cocoon coat (as seen here) + black skinnies + oxfords. I'd rather the shoe be my ultimate dream shoe, but those were always just out of reach...#budgetconcerns #governmentshutdown

The flip side of the coin is my vintage-y, kind of grunge-ish look (the sort seen last week). Beanie close at hand (ok, on my head) with a leather jacket (seen here is one that got away, from Narnia vintage) and a shlubby tee with black skinnies and a boot. Plus, rings. I kind of fluctuate between these two "extremes" all winter long...which look do you prefer? Also, how awesome is the floor at Narnia?

P.S. That first snap was taken in my former apartment in my roommate's room. I've never had a room that big (this was at the time I was living in a literal closet, for the record.)

[NOW PLAYING] SHINE 2009

I've been crushing on Finland's Shine 2009 pretty intensely for the last week (their new album came out on the 15th). There's something distinctly late 90's about their sound, very pre-EDM techno-house-pop with whiffs of Moby and shades of Robbie Williams. This photo admittedly bears no relation to the song, but I like it so whatever. It's from the incredible (and criminally adorable) photo series Haru & Mina by Hideaki Hamada. LINGERED UPON

Last week my Pinterest was blowing up with images from this shoot. I understand why—there's a lot of takeaway for the reader, even though the space is so sparsely decorated. Granted, this apartment has a lot in common with other spaces I've saved to one board or another and you might feel like you've seen it a million times before, but that, to me, is Pinterest's greatest strength. It's actually really helpful to look at a half bajillion white-walled apartments that vary from each other by only the slightest bit. I also just like variations on a theme, so sue me.

The real a-ha moment for me was this simple bulb, wrapped around this peg thing. I stopped into Top Hat last weekend and saw something very similar, just outsized bulbs, really, hanging from rope. I think you're supposed to put them in some sort of fixture, like a cool chandelier, but this could be the perfect idea for them. The only other lamp option I really like is prohibitively expensive, so we'll see what I come up with...All photos © Alice Gao.

Talk Unisex To Me

"I think that in the future, all clothes will be unisex," says Ukrainian designer Julia Efimchuk. "I like the mix." And the mix is what it's all about—Efimchuk's young label, Yulia Yefimtchuk+, and Ukraine-based online retailer Hako recently released an AW13 collection that includes pants, shirts, dresses and skirts for both women and men, all inspired by skate culture and British mods. "In Kiev, a lot of guys belong to the street subculture," notes Efimchuk, who declares music her number one source of inspiration. You can see all of the looks from the collection here.

I love the simplicity of the line and how easy it'd be to mix and match pieces, not to mention there's totally an undercurrent of the religious garb influence we talked about over the summer. That first image in particular brings to mind Steve Salter's conversation with Nicomede Talavera, in which the designer talks about turning to Muslim students in East London for sartorial inspiration. The fact that this is coming from Ukraine, but still has that vibe to it, is really amazing to me. There's also something of space-age uniformity about it, something Big Brother pod person-y, which I think could be really fun. You know. And I love that each look is paired with sneakers and that multiple beanies were involved in the making of this lookbook—nice food for thought for our modern grunge/neo-grunge/post grunge discussion, no?

As for Hako, well, they have a dedicated 'Unisex' menu tab so...#winning. (Another favorite in store is the OMELYA atelier sweatshirt, serving a mix of Balenciaga and Juun.J realness—check it out!)

MILEY CYRUS MADE ME DO IT

It's time for the fall edition of Sean In Skirts, in which we ask: Is grunge the great unisex unifier? I know people were pretty into my très polished turtleneck look from the other week, but if you couldn't tell from that mischievous twinkle in my eye, I'm livin' by a new motto: "I'm just being Miley." I don't need no sport coat or "glasses"—I can't see through the fog of sex and awesomeness that I'm walking through right now, anyway. Hell, I don't even need pants. But what does this all have to do with androgyny and 90's alt-rock? Find out—plus see the rest of this outfit—after the jump!

ROLLING WITH THE HOMIE

You guys, Dab is in NYC! Well, he's been here for a hot second, but I'm just now getting around to blahging about it. We met up in Dumbo over the weekend to shoot some hot lewks (he was previously behind the camera here); then he dropped by my place to witness firsthand my brills decorating, but apparently mistook it for Rent-A-Swag because he left wearing my Erin Wasson x Low Luv ring (last seen here.) [ZOMG post from two years ago I'm wearing True Religion cords >_<] Just kidding, he didn't swipe it...it fits him better and maybe looks really good on him...it's like whatever. We gallivanted our way into some hella sweet spots I'd never even heard of, including Modern Anthology and the Brooklyn Roasting Company, pics below. I think I kind of love Dumbo, it has a really unique feel to it...more exploring is a definite must!

BEDROOM INSPIRATION

So in case you were wondering (you weren't), my big bedroom makeover is going to be ready soon! But there are a few crucial things I need before it'll function as a proper Gay Hipster Sex Cave (read: I eat pizza alone in my bed there!) such as a more phallic collection of cacti (sweet jesus, I cannot stop insinuating that everything looks like a penis to me, I'm not even trying, I swear) and some more art. I'm thinking that I'll put up one of those "floating" shelves above my bed (as seen in the top-left hand picture) and keep some framed pieces there; I also really love the way that shelf in the bottom pic looks with the really minimal, staggered frames. I was thinking of having an industrial-looking ladder, on the legs of which I could display 'zines or something, but have yet to find one that's the right mix of industrial chic and rustic bohemian glamour. Damn.

YOUNG ADULT

The other morning I refilled my MetroCard in under half an hour. This might not seem extraordinary, but it was a BFD for me. You see, I usually charge my MetroCard and can't ever remember the correct billing address for whichever credit card I'm using, so I end up getting my zip code wrong over and over (and over.) But this time I had actual, real money in my bank account and the good sense to use my debit card. (I have never forgotten my pin, knock on wood.) I felt so adult-ish. I'd sort-of budgeted for a need in my life, and not a need like a vintage fringed Navajo vest because "I just feel like it's so me," but a real necessity, you know?

But then I realized I'm almost thirty. Ok, so I'm 26, but in gay years that makes me...117. And in my mind I feel like I'm just coming out of my teens. In terms of life-preparedness I'm somewhere between the beginning part of Lost In Translation where ScarJo is just sort of picking her butt in a hotel room (except I'm single) and that scene in Bridesmaids where Maya Rudolph shits herself in the middle of the street (except I'm single). All is not lost, though. I've compiled here a list of thirteen things I know about myself/have learned about myself/have come to terms with about myself so that I can feel like some degree of progress has been made over the last two and a half decades. (Holy fuck, two and a half decades! *shits self in street*)

HOCKNEY WAS A BOSS

UPDATE: Ok, so this is David Hockney—not Truman Capote, as formerly stated. Shit. I blame Tumblr. But you have to admit that the two are strikingly similar—at least in some pictures! How To Wear A Turtleneck

I don't mean to toot my own taste horn, but I told you turtlenecks were going to be hot this season and—according to the moodboard I just made—they so totally are. Don't just take my word for it—Glenn O'Brien agrees! (In an article from like, 2005, but whatever.) A more recent testament to their hotness would be Details' editorial Ready To Wear, in which hottie-with-a-body Clément Chabernaud wears a Balenciaga turtleneck and makes dudes be like, "Where my manties at?" They're on the floor, drenched in sensational f*cking style, that's where they are.

What I'm trying to say is that turtlenecks are wicked sweet, even though you may think they're kinda nerdy in a Steve Jobs way—or, worse: in a Steve Jobs as played by Ashton Kutcher sort of way. Maybe you think they're stylistically on par with bellbottoms and polyester point-collared shirts, but I've got news for you: ok, 1) bellbottoms are amazing and 2) so are turtlenecks. Polyester shirts are literally the worst, so I can't fault you there.

01 Turtlenecks look great with a suit/suiting elements, aka I'm telling you to wear them with a sportcoat and nice pants and not dad jeans to avoid the aforementioned Kutcher/Jobs comparisons. You're welcome.
02 Since you'll be going sans tie, consider a pocket square to snazz up your chest region.
03 I feel like keeping your color palette simple—two to three hues in the same family—is ideal, but this is just a personal preference. But, I mean, how great does the dark gray on gray with brown look? And the denim with the dark blue with the black belt? These don't even really sound like color combos, but they totally are because turtlenecks.
04 Accessorizing with Monocle magazine is just so next level.
