MILEY CYRUS MADE ME DO IT

10.15.2013

It's time for the fall edition of Sean In Skirts, in which we ask: Is grunge the great unisex unifier? I know people were pretty into my très polished turtleneck look from the other week, but if you couldn't tell from that mischievous twinkle in my eye, I'm livin' by a new motto: "I'm just being Miley." I don't need no sport coat or "glasses"—I can't see through the fog of sex and awesomeness that I'm walking through right now, anyway. Hell, I don't even need pants. But what does this all have to do with androgyny and 90's alt-rock? Find out—plus see the rest of this outfit—after the jump!

As you can see from my shitty infographic above, Kurt Cobain and co. (he was in some band called "Nirvana"?) were no strangers to "cross-dressing." Cobain sometimes performed in dresses and was even on a quite famous cover of The Face in one. Then, almost 20 years later, Disney star Miley Cyrus wore Cobain's face on a Topshop maxi dress, presumably because she just felt like "He really gets me, you know?" and Hedi Slimane, who was waiting for Courtney Love to come out of that Subway with his $5 foot long, saw Cyrus and was inspired to design his men's collection in tribute to Cobain. Or something like that.

I kid, obviously, but I do worry that people have forgotten that grunge has nothing to do with $4,000 biker jackets—not that I'm an expert on the matter, just that I'm pretty sure Kurt Cobain wasn't about that life, so to speak. (I guess we could just ask Dave Grohl?) The current grunge "trend" is so far removed from anything even remotely grungy that I can't help but cringe every time I pass by a Topshop window—I mean, to get the "grunge" look you now buy mass-produced knock-offs of designer plaid? It's just weird. Don't get me wrong, I pin the shit out of SLP and particularly love the bags and, yes, even those leather jackets. But I don't humor myself that there's anything edgy about it—bougie, for sure, and hey, what upper-middle-class American who live tweets awards shows isn't a little bougie?—but not edgy.

Anyway, this is all just to say that grunge is on my mind and so is androgyny, as ever, and so I wore my pinstripe Brooks Brothers skirt (last seen here) with combat boots, a beat-up vintage army tee ("vintage army tee," that's pretty bougie right there) and my lil' leather jacket. Are you doing grunge this season? Who's inspiring you?
