I'M EVERY WOMAN (ON TV)

1.07.2013

Or, my self as a tapestry of ladies...but not in a serial killer way!

As the title and subtitle of this post imply, I've always found a lot to identify with in female TV characters. As early as middle school, when I was a vulnerable young boy realizing I had crushes on all the other boys, I found vicarious empowerment in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (as did a lot of gays). Those formative years also saw me cheering for Gilmore Girls's Paris Geller, an insensitive overachiever whose demanding personality was tinged with social desperation. I was never actually a bossy know-it-all, but I wanted to be. Then I realized how much smarter other people already were and I quit while I was ahead. Well, behind. You get my point. Since then I've found myself in a host of lady characters, from Miranda Hobbes to Liz Lemon, and with the second season of HBO's Girls set to premiere this Sunday, I thought it would be nice to do a quick roundup of a few standouts...

TWENTYFIVEYRSOLD

9.21.2012

I am twenty-five years old today and I honestly don't know how to feel about it. My mom tells me I'm basically still in her womb and have nothing to worry about - time is on my side! - but all I can think about is (cry with me here) where I feel like I should be according to Sex and the City. I'm pretty sure this a legitimate disorder that Lena Dunham's Girls seeks to rectify, but for me, it's too little too late. I can't help but recall that scene from Carrie's thirty-fifth birthday party where she's sitting alone at her dinner table, waiting for her friends to arrive, and the woman behind her is having a party too - celebrating the big 2-5.

The post title is totally, definitely, yes indeedy the tagline to the Sex And The City movie, because despite the fact that Girls is the cultural touchstone du jour, I'm still a Charlotte at heart. A Charlotte-Miranda hybrid. With a dash of Carrie, but maybe like, later seasons Carrie? Long story short, aren't these brownstones around my neighborhood so pretty? And don't I look so ready for Korean Mr. Big to sweep me off my feet in a black town car that preferably runs on peanut oil? Because that's how I feel.

These bitchin' black pants I picked up for an interview from Acne's new Greene Street shop (sidenote: they're ladypants and can someone explain to me why pockets in women's pants are SO SMALL? Women have hands too, last time I checked!) The Steven Alan shirt I scooped at a sample sale - I love it with the sleeves rolled all the way up - and the bright turquoise bracelets add a nice "tribal candy jewelry" vibe. My Filson briefcase has been a huge compliment-magnet, even though I figured New York would be fairly supersaturated with Filson briefcases, and paired with my vintage Ferragamo loafers it makes this a fairly nice casual Friday look, no? A bit more polished than a lot of my outfits of late!
