It's the first outfit post of the new year! Currently serving some high-low trillness, courtesy of this CDG coat that I picked up at Barneys on mega sale. I bought it a size too big (which still wasn't too big) and had it taken in in all the right places by Hong Kong Tailor Jack.

I really like it as an alterna-suiting option when you want to lend some dramatic flair to your more budget-friendly items, which here include trousers and a patterned shirt from Uniqlo (I like wearing my short-sleeved shirts under sweaters in fall/winter because the arms don't get all weird and chunky) and a pair of Zara platforms I got on sale that fill the void left in my soul because I couldn't afford these Prada platforms I loved a year ago. (ZOMG time flies.)

The sweater is courtesy ASOS—I love (and need) that pop of color!—and the clutch you may recognize from this post. Shot under the BQE, right around the corner from where I live.

NEW HAT + SCARF SITUATION

Winter weather sucks balls. Dress accordingly. John Smedley beanie, merino wool scarf by Grahame Fowler (it's not an infinity scarf, FYI—I just have it wrapped up all circle-like because it's cozier that way). If you are in need of anything made of wool or a sick-ass pair of shoes (exhibit A, exhibit B), go to Grahame Fowler. Most stuff is made in fancy old England, plus the shop floor is covered in layered Persian and Turkish rugs and it's gorgeous.138 West 10th Street, next to Jack's Stir Brew. Not a paid endorsement, just a fangirl. That is all.

P.S. The sportcoat is A.P.C., which you've seen a million times, but just FYI—Steven Alan has a really similar style on sale right now. Similar fit and everything. And I'll shut up about Steven Alan now, Scout's honor.

SO PERFECT IT HURTS

Literally. I'm dying. Also of note: Ok, I don't know if you ladies are as finnicky as I am about your purses, but it turns out that the WANT clutch I blogged about here is actually made in CHINA. What!? What? Hashtag double take, hashtag letdown. I thought all of WANT's bags were de facto produced in Montreal or wherever they're based, but apparently bishes ain't heard Bey's Upgrade U in a hot minute. This beauty is made in Portugal, like all good bags, and is perfectly sized for my phone, my wallet, my coin purse, my lip balm and my keys.

WINTER WANDERLAND

I went out to my parent's house this weekend to sort through the remaining crap in my former bedroom closet - what can go up on eBay, what can go in the bin, which piles can be condensed into larger piles to instill a sense of accomplishment, etc. I found these A.P.C. trousers in there in my "hold onto" pile and commissioned my little brother for a post-snowfall photo shoot.

This coat always gets a ton of compliments, though it's fatally flawed - there's no lining! It's just cotton and just cotton is not warm, but I can luckily layer a good bit under there. The scarf, a cashmere delight from Florence, is another winner. The hat, on the other hand...people only seem to think of Indiana Jones when they see hats like this! It's a shame, as I think it's just wonderful. How did you celebrate the snow? What is it that people who don't take pictures of themselves when the weather's nice do? Ski-tubing? Para-sledding? Reindeer herding? Whatever it was, hope it was wonderful!

DAPPER'S IN THE DETAILS

For menswear traditionalists pursuing the modern dandy vibe, these are the details that really cinch it – the tartan tie contrasting the mini-check shirt against the neutral sweater under the cord blazer with, bon appétit, a paisley pocket square for the K.O.

Another great detail I just thought of that you could try? Line your jacket with a crazy/fancy fabric. I did this with just the sleeves of a Zara blazer last year; here are the steps: find a fabric you like (I used a ladies’ American Indian-esque print teesh, also from Zara), then take it to your tailor and say, “Please do this for me, thank you.” Voila! Or if you're feeling non-traditional and you want a special hidden detail all to yourself, you could...paint your toenails! (Make little faces on the big toes; really indulge, like you’ve taken yourself to a spa for fifth graders) (Oh man, that could be a weird thing, no? Don’t take yourself to spas for fifth graders, what are you doing there!? Get out!) We'll stick to the traditional details for now.
