1 LEATHER SKIRT, 2 WAYS

9.16.2013

The idea here was simple: take one versatile wardrobe "staple" (a YSL reproduction leather wrap skirt) and style it two ways to reference two very different designers, Yohji Yamamoto and Rick Owens. Both have played with gender boundaries and conformity in their work, and a lot of the dialogue we've seen played out on the runway (or on Style.com and in the pages L'uomo Vogue through the years) has to do with proportion and silhouette. So, long story short: I'm just a boy in a leather wrap skirt, standing in a garden, asking you to buy him a matching manpurse.

The first look is "Yamamoto-inspired". You saw something similar in my NYFW post last week, with an N.Hoolywood check shirt instead of this white CDG number. I love the flowiness and wrinkliness of this material with the leather skirt; my thrift-store hat (with the top pushed out, seen here with it in) and my vintage Ferragamo lace-ups, make this a very Olsen ensemble.

The second look was inspired by Rick Owens. I swapped out the hat for a black beanie, the flowy white button-up for an extended-hem t-shirt from OAK, and the lace-ups for a pair of combat boots. Et voilà! It's a totally different vibe, one that inspired a Steven Klein-esque edge to the photos.

Which look do you prefer? Photos Brian Marrone; produced and directed by moi.
