LET'S GET GAY MARRIED

6.18.2013

Long-term readers of this blerg will know that I've expressed some divergent thoughts on marriage (hither and thither) and its relative importance to me and my life goals. It's not that I don't fully support equality, on the marriage front as much as any other front, it's just that I'd like the equality debate to not hinge on that implicit dichotomy—singles vs. couples. Those of us in a binding lifelong union vs. those of us who are maybe single, maybe in a non-binding lifelong union, or maybe we're just Nickelback fans and who the f*ck could spend undying eternity with a Nickelback fan?

All of this is just to say that I wish there were more laws on the books that respected and protected a more diverse array of life choices, like planned-for single parenthood or constantly getting a lot of (self-respecting) ass because you feel like it. (I discussed this much more in depth in my last HuffPo piece, FYI.) It seems there's still this underlying fear of a gray area that's informing the marriage debate in this country, but queerness is kind of all about that gray area, you know? I'm hoping that sex education and prevalent social mores come to reflect that in due time...but for now—pretty wedding moodboards!

If I do get married, it's going to be glamorous as f*ck. I'm determined to get married outdoors and I will only get married in June. I'll wear something custom, duh, and the ceremony will also be performance art because I have to upstage Terence Koh's '09 East Hampton wedding.

Miranda Brooks' ceremony (always Miranda) seemed totally gorgeous and not too fussy (you can see the full thing here), so I have that in my head as a sort of low-budget blueprint. I mean, it wasn't even a destination wedding.

Honestly, I just want like, a band of gypsies playing jazz and ribbon dancing and I'll be happy. But I also really want a kid involved, so if I don't have one by then I'll have to borrow somebody's. As far as portrait photography goes, I've always really loved the above shot of NPH and David Burtka—it's actually romantic and not cheesy! But I think it was staged for a photo shoot? C'est la vie...

What are your thoughts on marriage? Will you be getting gay married soon?

DEAR INTERNET No. 31

1.27.2013

It's been awhile since I did a Dear Internet post and an even longer time since I did one this way, as a giant list instead of an infographic-y thing. I feel like this is easier for people to digest, maybe? Ah, well, let me know in the comments if you have a preference!

First up, these are some of my favorite street style shots from the menswear shows, by Tommy and Nam. The Japanese guys are like, impossibly good at layering, of course, David Gandy looks like a modern Dick Tracy in his three-piece suit in muted tones (with a fedora!) and that guy with the bike...how perfect!

Some more of what I'm loving...these rooms I found on Pinterest - a great mix of modern furniture and art (top two photos) and different ways to have books on display (bottom two.)

This outdoor wedding shot by Kate, entirely on film. The gorgeous California setting, the succulents as centerpieces and the strings of lights in the air...love it!

Speaking of weddings, Diana is getting married and did a post on cakes and long story short, look how cute this carrot cake is:

This stir-fried broccoli with pesto looks delicious...I never would've thought to stir-fry with pesto!

The Honey & Bloom Etsy shop has adorable things, like totebags and stationery.

Monica Ramos has the coolest prints for sale on her Etsy shop, but if you aren't in a shopping mood, check out her Tumblr.

You should drop by Leah's blog A Future Present. Aside from cute cat pictures, she also takes pictures of her cute Brooklyn apartment...it's pretty cute.

Annnd that's a wrap. Hopefully some of these will be new to you and you'll enjoy them as much as I do. Happy (lazy) Sunday!

FINE & DANDY

8.08.2011

Fedora, flower pin (on hat) and scarf - Low Vintage
Shirt - Uniqlo
Vest - Ceri Vintage
Jacket - Ganji

My wedding outfit this past weekend was almost entirely vintage! Special thanks to Low for that. The vest I picked up in Italy (it's military garb from the 1940's) and the non-vintage items are the blazer, which I picked up in China and the shirt from Uniqlo. Even though I didn't watch the royal wedding, I knew my friend's marriage wouldn't be recognized by the fashion gods unless a flamboyant hat was present at the ceremony. Happy to do my part. Congratulations, Fareine and Steve! For more pictures from the wedding, click here.

IMAGINE ME & YOU

8.04.2011

And now for a silly post...seeing as one of my best friends is getting married this weekend I'm celebrating her special day with a post all about my special (imaginary) day.

First up: the future husband. Joseph Altuzarra is a French-Chinese American designer who probably loves me, but doesn't realize it. Yet.

When he proposes I’m going to make this face (I’m going to have to keep my bottom eyelashes like that for months just in case):

And hopefully the ring will be this unabashedly awesome...

I'll of course look this cute hand-typing my invitations. Except I won't be a woman. That's for my seventies! And then I'll pick from an analog music assortment (maybe some choice picks from my mother's record collection...)

This image from Domino has been my ideal wedding setting for like, three years. No joke. It's perfect!

Of course I'll have to wear something fantabulous for the ceremony...

Although I might replace the hat with one of the headpieces below. The one on the left is more traditional (ha!), but I do love Traina's Givenchy horns.

This photo captures the "energy" of our honeymoon destination, wherever that may be...preferably Cartagena...

And then of course we'll have an Asian baby! Because that's how gaybies works.

Now...after all that, I have to admit that ever since I found out Charlotte Gainsbourg isn’t married I’ve been questioning how much I really want it. Lord knows there’s nothing I put more faith in than the life choices of French style icons. Stay tuned next week for posts about said friend's actual wedding!
