[EATING] POTAGE PARMENTIER

1.15.2013

This here soup is my actual, honest-to-God winter specialty. I have spent like a year perfecting it, give or take half a year and a few months. Ok, so I've made it like four times in my life. But this last time it was really delicious, soooo #authority.

What you'll need...
One large or two mid-sized (local, organic) Yukon Gold potato(es)
One giant leek (you'll find this at Whole Foods) or about 4/5 regular leeks (at Farmer's Markets)
One/two cloves garlic
Half an onion
A giant chunk of unsalted butter
Organic low-sodium chicken broth
Organic (preferably artisanal and local) heavy cream
Chives for garnishing
Sea salt & pepper

Toss a chunk of butter into a large pot. I love butter and it is delicious, so you can't really go wrong here. Probably like 1/3 to 1/4 of a Plugra block of butter. Let it melt and chuck in the garlic, diced, and then the onion, sliced. Let them get all translucenty while you slice up the potato, then add that in. Now I add some sea salt and pepper and maybe some other herbs that I think will be delicious - have some fun here and toss in whatever smells good and seems like it would go with potatoes. Once you've let them simmer in the butter for a bit, drown it all in chicken stock - enough to just cover everything. I don't add water to this soup because I like it to be really flavorful. You could add a little water if you wanted, but that's partly why I suggest low-sodium broth - so that you don't have to worry about oversalting the soup if you don't dilute it. Bring this to a boil and then let it simmer down again, maybe for twenty minutes or so. Then pop it in your food processor (I recommend this guy) and purée the shit out of it. I like this soup to be smooth and creamy (teehehe). Put the puréed soup back into your pot and add the heavy cream until it looks pretty. I went through half a pint of cream last time. Taste the soup and see if you need to add more broth/cream/water and then season it with some chives on top. Et voilà! This should make roughly 3-4 servings.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH + APPLE SOUP

11.06.2012

The other week I went apple picking with some friends in upstate New York. As you may know, apple picking is an outdoor activity, which threw me for a loop. What man purse goes with outdoor activities? Then it dawned on me that an orchard would be a very appropriate place to debut my vintage WWII nurse's bag I picked up from 10 ft. Single. So compact, yet still rugged. Apple picking season is over now, but fret not, dear reader - I've thought up some other low-impact outdoor activities for which this style of man purse is appropriate:

1. Ice skating
2. Drinking a latte/hot chocolate on a park bench
3. Watching guys play basketball. Is there basketball in winter? Is there ice basketball? That sounds dangerous...

Now, I would love to tell you that I ran home from the orchard and whipped up a soup using my freshly picked apples, but #truthbomb: I brought home too many apples and didn't know how to use them all. They got gross and...I chucked 'em. My b! So, a week or two later I Pinterested this recipe for butternut squash and apple soup and grabbed the apples from the local market. It was delicious! It turned out muuuch better than the lentil and apple-brown butter soup I blogged about making here. That one could be kindly described as "mealy;" or I could be up front and say it looked like baby vomit. Happy adventures in cooking, y'all!

INSTAGRAM LIFE VOL. 1

8.09.2012

Summer is winding down, can you believe it? This is the month all of Europe hits the snooze alarm and people start to actually go back to school, holy crap. To savor the flavor while it lasts, here's a brief look into some of what I've done this summer...

clockwise, from top left: I made new business cards! And I'm passing them out like crazy. Like how the font on the card is the font of the blog header? #designminded // I went to Riis beach for a shoot recently, more on that later! These bushes were pretty and the ocean was spectacular! // Great storefront signage on Rivington

Picasso-viewers at MoMa...it feels like I took this forever ago! I love MoMa, holla Target Fridays // These are some African-print shorts I picked up from a street vendor whose nephew ships them over here from Nigeria. Or Senegal. Or, you know, like...somewhere in continental Africa // Boats on the water in Central Park // Kelly looking Virgin Suicides-y in the Park

Cherry tomatoes I cut up to make the salad featured here // A new read for the season...I'm telling you, plants are my new obsession! // Spinach and a Gorgonzola-Blue Cheese hybrid I picked up at Eastern District to make this dish, so good.

DEAR INTERNET No. 20

5.04.2012

Oh, look! Asian guys! Where'd they come from? The internet. Long story short, I discovered two amaaaaazing new street style blogs that chronicle the sartorial splendor of my potential future husbands (here's looking at you, dude in picture 1), photographer James Bent's La Mode Outré (bottom photo) and Hoya Snap (top three).

Ah, Spring...the warmer weather makes me want a new bag, preferably akin to this sexy Dries Van Noten number.

I've been pinning lots of pretty gardens lately! Look at them here and dream about garden parties with me.

Also on Pinterest - I recently caved in and started a food board. It's mostly for the photography because cooking is hard, but these recipes from Hungry Ghost and Tartelette look so good they're bound to taste all kinds of wonderful.

Pictureplane is all I've been listening to lately. The video above is pretty much why the term "mindf*ck" was invented (latex bodysuit!), but the music is just awesome. Check him out on Soundcloud here.

All of the images in this post link back to their original site! Click through to see them in context...

It's been so warm lately I feel the need to post some of my favorite snaps of men in shorts. I love the looser leg and rolled cuff of the styles seen here. (Wait, is the bottom hem of a short called a "cuff"? Or is it just a "leg opening"? "Thigh hole"?) Also on my radar: good sandals and white sneaks.

These woven slip-ons are soooo cute! #perfectsummershoe

This bookcase, in Claire Thomson-Jonville's apartment, is the greatest bookcase ever. Super super cool, but still functional!

Sous Style is an awesome new site and I feel a bit like Magellan for discovering it. Except that Magellan didn't find shit by following links on Twitter, but details, details...One of their regular features is hot guys cooking - brilliant! Here we see one of the hottest guys aka Future Husband #3, who again is probably unaware that we're meant to be, but just you wait for that surprise pregnancy! I still am...

And last, but not least...I've been listening to Grimes' new album, Visions, pretty much nonstop for the past two weeks. This video of her performing Genesis live is sort of fascinating, plus she looks like the lovechild of Arwen and Legolas who decided to leave Middle Earth and pursue a love affair with her keyboard, which couldn't be a bad thing.

Happy weekend!

[EATING] CHICKPEA LENTIL SOUP

2.22.2012

I’m trying my hand at a foodie post again, are you ready? I know all you want is to see me prancing around in ladypants talking about murses and vintage pinky rings, but Hey! Soupmaking is a legitimate new hobby of mine and I've got something to say about it! As a vegetarian, soup has been absolutely essential this winter since I’m using a lot of dried or canned ingredients rather than turning to a new produce haul every week to craft my menu. One of my favorite's is a chickpea lentil soup that's really delicious and wonderfully versatile. And this time around, I’ve got the ingredients listed here for you, after the jump!

[EATING] CHOCOLATE POTS

12.22.2011

As we wind down this last week before Christmas I've been tempted into writing up my first real foodie post. Of a sort. You see, I had a dinner party last week and while the main course was a tad, erm, not cooked...the dessert was a huge success!

These little chocolate pots from Nigella Lawson are a particular favorite because half the fun is in the presentation. I suppose a ramekin might do these babies justice, but I serve mine in Fiestware teacups handed down from my parents. Jamie Oliver also has a chocolate pots recipe in his book, The Naked Chef Takes Off, but his calls for brandy and baby boy just ain't that flossy. I was going to type up Nigella's recipe and present it to you here, but that was too hard so I thought maybe I'd just write up the ingredients list. That also proved challenging. Instead, I found the recipe online! Click here to check that out.

I will say that I used Green & Black's organic dark chocolate and it was absolutely decadent. Although, that may have been due to the fact that I doubled the suggested serving sizes. Who can say? I also need to note that I hand whipped that whipped cream with a fork. (If you want pillowy whipped cream, you wash my whisk! That isht is complicated!)
