ALL BLACK EVERYTHING

11.29.2013

Except for those green shoes...and the beanie and socks. But other than that, today's look is all about post-gothic otter pup realness, with shades of Ashley Olsen channeling Rose McGowan circa Doom Generation. If that sentence means nothing to you, don't ask questions—just click through for more pictures!

2 SHORTS + SWEATER COMBOS

Because time is running out to show off the #otterluvr physique you climbed so many stairs while clenching your asscheeks to get. Wait, who did what now? I wore shorts with a sweater, two times over, and it was so fan-f*cking-tastic I took pictures to prove it...that's what happened. In outfit 1, above, I'm the epitome of "barista chic." If you're one of the 7.5 people who follow me on Twitter you'll maybe be familiar with my ongoing (secret) love affair with Mud Truck Guy. He's so cute I could throw up all over myself. No but like, seriously.

Anyway, he looks like a Scott or maybe a Kevin and he wears shit like this and it's adorable. The hole-y cardigan is a definite essential, but Mud Truck Guy probably wouldn't know Phillip Lim if I smacked him in the back of the head with a 31 Hour manpurse and dragged him back to my cave of sex. Which I don't have, so...no harm no foul.

Outfit 2 is great for students. It says, "Hey guys! I'm #booksmart! Look at all these books I'm posing with! See? Literacy!" I actually wore this exact outfit two whole years ago, back when I very first started this blog. Isn't that crazy? God, I was such a basic bitch back then...which look do you prefer?

ABUELITO IS THE LOOK

8.01.2013

Because Cuban grandfathers are so hot right now, I guess? Maybe I shouldn't be in charge of improving my own sex life...

I've been on a shirt-buying rampage of late and this short-sleeve marble jacquard number from Sidian, Ersatz, & Vanes is one of my most favoritest acquisitions—picked up on sale at Owen for a quarter of the original price, #winning. I love the print, obvs, but also that pajama-y collar—it looks perfect left open so I can flaunt my charpet (chest carpet, duh), so graciously exposed as it is by one of OAK's versatile tees. The high-waisted pants were last seen here, the hat and pinky ring you saw here, and the bracelet is Giles & Brother. The frames are Warby Parker's Begley—do we like the round shape? It's been divisive...but I think I'm on board with it. Photos McArthur Joseph.

HOW TO DRESS FOR WORK IN SUMMER

7.24.2013

How to dress for work in summer

What you really need to ask yourself is: do I look like a power lesbian summering in Nantucket? The answer should be, "Yes."

I feel like I could totally life-partner with Rachel Maddow in this outfit. The black pant, rather than a lighter-colored chino, makes it a little more boardroom appropriate and would nicely complement Maddow's hair. And you know Ellen would wear the balls out of a pair of Chuck Taylors with her summer suiting, a look she probably made cool back in college, well before Jeremy Piven & Co. hopped on the bandwagon and ruined everything.

Up top we've got a pink, seersucker shirt from J.Crew that I'm literally wearing with a Band of Outsiders repp tie with boats on it, wHaT!? Let me explain: I was in J.Crew one day because I know they make XS's, looking for a basic white or dark navy oxford and striking out. Then I saw this on the rack and thought it couldn't hurt to venture out of my comfort zone. #TakingChances ( <-- Celine Dion reference, anyone?) It fits really well and looks even better wrinkled than ironed out, which means it's super easy to dress up or dress down. (This is it dressed down.)

And then we have these boss-ass (are we hyphenating that now?) Warby Parker frames. Ugh, aren't they so sick? Someone at work said I looked very "weekend in the Hamptons" in them, so basically she called me an asshole...but a hot one!

Shot by McArthur in Washington Square Park, a great place for:
  • Watching hot men do things
  • Instagramming iced coffee
  • Instagramming a cute picnic
  • Taking selfies
  • Being like, "this is like, my favorite park."

P.S. Here's a beauty tip - don't wear a tinted moisturizer on the back of your neck (it had SPF in it and I didn't want to burn!) It will ruin the collar of your shirt and just generally be disgusting to look at.

BABES IN BOYLAND

3.12.2013

This is me and my friend Max and I'm basically just sharing this because I want my mom to know that I did go out at least once this month. (Hi, mom! I did it!) Max obviously understands how to pose for Party Pictures, because he's giving that cam some major stankeye. I, on the other hand, have this "slutty librarian" thing going on, as I'm about to have a nip-slip in my deep-V OAK teesh (available here, if you want that otterboi look) and my Warby Park's are halfway down the bridge of my nose. But it's all ok, because they played Trina that night...photo via Gayletter.

ANYTHING BUT BASIC

9.25.2012

I know the trend right now is print-on-pattern-on-print, but you know what? I'm poor, and when I needed to invest in some suiting separates this summer, I invested in basic (and versatile) black. Well, actually, the only thing I bought over the summer was the tie - I left all of mine in Virginia, forgetting I would need them for interviews. The problem with so much simplicity is what to do with the look outside of a corporate setting to make it personal. Instead of switching up the black tie for a pink one and the black sportcoat for a lime green one, I budget-mindedly opted to change up only one item: the white shirt for the neon, psychedelic-print one. I figure, if there were ever a shirt to make black anything but basic, it's this bad boy. (Readers will recognize it from this post as the shirt I had custom-made from artist Patrick Costello's 'Eat Yer Greens' fabric over the summer - this nana is exclusive, baby!) I "grounded the look" with these goooorgeous deadstock vintage brogues from the new What Goes Around Comes Around boutique at Astor Place - where I happen to work! Drop by and see me! These shoes pretty much literally cripple me when I walk, but they are SO CUTE. I feel like the color and contrast seam detail on the sole is very contemporary - I could see these from Mark McNairy. Like this look? Check out last year's autumnal take on personalizing suiting separates here!

P.S. I love to tuck my ties into my waistband!

P.P.S. Yes, I advocate going beltless when keeping it casual.

[SHORTS STORY] EURO TRAD

6.11.2012

The second installment of our Shorts Story series celebrates the style flavors of Europe. Yes, I just typed that sentence! Long story short, my pants are very tiny and I'm wearing driving moccasins. The shorts used to be a pair of pants, for the record, that I unceremoniously took scissors to, promptly destroyed and had to take to my (older, Korean) tailor to see if she could get the hems straight. "They are short enough," she says. I guess so, but everyone knows that Europeans invented both the Speedo and the nude beach and really, why am I even clothed right now? But srsly u guyz, I think there's something to be said for a crisp button-down, sleeves rolled, paired with tailored khaki shorts. You can see my stylespirations below. That guy on the left knows how to button a shirt - you don't. On the right, blogger Christoph Schaller is German and therefore fully committed to the Euro Trad sensibility. What do we think? How does my spin on European prep compare to last week's Americanized version?

KHAKI IN THE AFTERNOON

2.27.2012

Oh, wow, look how much I love nature! That last picture is so compelling, right?
Save the trees! See how happy they make me? Yesterday I went for an afternoon stroll wearing my wide-wale cord jacket (not to be confused with my much-less-wide wale cord jacket from A.P.C.) that I picked up at a Goodwill in Switzerland. It's quite nice, yeah? I love the shoulder seam detail...and I paired it with my vintage khaki army shirt and cropped navy slacks from H&M. The bag is a faux-Mulberry (oops #China) and the shoes are my vintage Doc Martens, always a total sensation. The glasses make me look so smart, no? Excuse me, I have to go learn some science now.

special thank you to Darryl for helping me take fotooos!

COLONEL MUSTARD

2.20.2012

In the street...with a camera. Blammo, Clue reference! I finally made good on my framespiration and am happy to debut here my new Warby Parker glasses - Beckett in Striped Evergreen. Aren't they so cute you could just die? But don't. The jacket is vintage French military academy garb that my aunt picked up in Paris - buttons! It's admittedly a bit hard to wear, considering the fact that it's made for marching and saber wielding, or whatever people did at military academy in France, but this is me dressing it down with cuffed Banana Republic ladyjeans, a wide-striped sweater and vintage penny loafers. The bag is my trusty Filson briefcase that I've seen all over now - I keep telling myself I will turn it into some interesting D.I.Y. project involving handwashing and dyes, but I never commit. Such is life...

P.S. If you're on Pinterest, get excited! I created a *fruitpunch style board where all of my outfits are available for your neverending stylespiration. Repin to your "Style," "Cool Looks," or "Gay Boyfriend" board today!

jeans - Banana Republic
