2 SHORTS + SWEATER COMBOS

Because time is running out to show off the #otterluvr physique you climbed so many stairs while clenching your asscheeks to get. Wait, who did what now? I wore shorts with a sweater, two times over, and it was so fan-f*cking-tastic I took pictures to prove it...that's what happened. In outfit 1, above, I'm the epitome of "barista chic." If you're one of the 7.5 people who follow me on Twitter you'll maybe be familiar with my ongoing (secret) love affair with Mud Truck Guy. He's so cute I could throw up all over myself. No but like, seriously.

Anyway, he looks like a Scott or maybe a Kevin and he wears shit like this and it's adorable. The hole-y cardigan is a definite essential, but Mud Truck Guy probably wouldn't know Phillip Lim if I smacked him in the back of the head with a 31 Hour manpurse and dragged him back to my cave of sex. Which I don't have, so...no harm no foul.

Outfit 2 is great for students. It says, "Hey guys! I'm #booksmart! Look at all these books I'm posing with! See? Literacy!" I actually wore this exact outfit two whole years ago, back when I very first started this blog. Isn't that crazy? God, I was such a basic bitch back then...which look do you prefer?

[COAT TALES] THE COCOON

12.10.2012

coat Uniqlo // leggings Urban Outfitters (seen here) // shirt thrifted // shoes Y-3 // cap thrifted

Today's post is all about taking some sartorial inspiration from the ladies. I picked up this wool-blend cocoon coat at Uniqlo, operating under the influence of Céline's oversized cocoon concoctions from AW'12, showing up in ads and eds all over right now. The sporty thing has been #trending in a big way, I think partly due to the omnipresence of those Nike sneaker heels, or, "sneels," and Lord knows everybody is still crazy in love with snapbacks thanks to Supreme's continued prominence at the forefront of mainstream style consciousness. My shoes are secondhand Y-3 from Tokio 7 and the hat is actually a thrifted Kool cigarettes cap, the green 'K' a subtle reference to those trés cool (punny! sort of?) Kenzo x New Era caps. I'm wearing the vegan leather leggings I picked up at Urban Outfitters last year (seen here) and a thrifted graphic tee in the same blueberry hue we discussed last week.

But what am I reading? 032c is a Berlin-based publication that came onto my radar about two years ago. They've been going for a decade or so, but I wasn't convinced to pick up a copy until I was piecing through their current issue and read the following in regards to the, "ducktail hair, washed-out complexion and bleached eyebrows" of the Balenciaga AW12 menswear campaign:

Aesthetic modifications tend to stay within the boundaries of familiar human physiology. When genetic engineering - in the context of being able to mold our image - becomes widely accessible in the future, there will be a point of departure where personal improvement drifts outside the accepted parameters of our anatomy.

Hot damn if I don't love a cerebral take on the psychosocial implications of the styling of a high-fashion campaign. That initial appetite-wetting was further appeased on getting cozy with the pub, which features in-depth articles on everything from urban planning to the complex family history of one of America's most prolific graphic designers. In short, I highly recommend it. Also, it goes with my outfit! Let's take a look at some of the other inspirations for today's look:

01 Karlie Kloss by Roe Ethridge for Acne Paper. I think, aside from the Daria-fronted seasonal campaign, this is my favorite image featuring that Céline coat. The styling...parfait!
02 Blogger Sandra Hagelstam of 5 Inch And Up. Hagelstam's looks are often athletics-influenced...here she is making an oversized basketball jersey look sexy, and not like Snooki thinks she makes oversized basketball jerseys look sexy, but in a real way.
03 Blogger Zanita Morgan of Zanita. Baby girl wears a snapback like nobody's business!

Is thinking that I need to be more effortlessly stylish too much effort? Oh, balls...also: I am obsessed with tattoos. Except I'm terrified of getting tattooed. Is henna still a thing? Oh, man, what is Brooklyn doing to me o_O? Cole Mohr for Urban Outfitters x Champion, via.

[SHORTS STORY] CRAZYSEXYCOOL

6.18.2012

This week's outfit is super casual (super cazh? caszh?), so I brought out my Blue Steel to really sell it. Except for trademark reasons I can't actually call it Blue Steel, so it's officially, "The Cerulean Hammer." Please to pay special attention to how awesome my rings look in picture two, because I spent a lot of time trying to figure out that particular configuration. Thx.

[SHORTS STORY] AMERICAN PREP

6.04.2012

This month I'm embarking on a special journey...a journey to that item of clothing at the heart of summer dressing: shorts. Shorts are tricky because, to be blunt, it's easy to look like crap wearing them. Weird pocket placement, strange and unnecessary seams around the ass/crotch, a plethora of lengths that can be really unflattering...shorts are tricky. Enter the first in my Shorts Story series: American Prep. This is different from Euro-inflected versions of preppiness because boat shoes. Also, see my horse bracelet, vintage kelly green Lacoste polo and whalebone necklace. I'm big into shorts-cuffing and highly recommend it for enhanced cuteness. To switch things up this week, you can see a modified version of the outfit below, topped off with a lightweight vintage sportcoat instead of a cardi.

This was fittingly shot at the gardens at the University of Virginia, speaking of which...I did some gardening yesterday! (BAM life update segue) While wearing something decidedly less preppy I volunteered at Annie Novak's Eagle Street Rooftop Farm here in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. I worked with a few other volunteers to plant rows of peppers - with my hands, y'all! I actually learned about planting stuff in the ground, which was awesome - and what's more awesome is that Annie described our work as "perfect"! So if anyone asks what I''m doing up here you can tell them I'm a gentleman farmer; I've got the Instagrams to prove it!

1) I got my hair cropped again! And today I went back for a little more because I'm a homosexual and I couldn't resist thE DrAmA!
2) Isn't this shirt so cute? Polka dots! And the fit ain't half bad, either. BUT: It's like, $50...for a linen/cotton blend made in Indonesia...from Urban Outfitters. Is it worth it? #debatable
3) If you can tell me what band's song this post's title comes from I'll give you five hugs and a jelly bean. Or five jelly beans and a hug...ball's in your court.

TWERKING FOR THE WEEKEND

4.16.2012

1) I tried on these boys' size 12 pants at Gap. Don't judge me! Does it help or hurt to say a 14 would've been a better fit? Regardless, what do we think of the color? Good green/bad green?
2) I went to Sephora...summer "beautine" post coming soon!
3) I picked up some decor 'zines for Sunday morning reading time - my favorite home was a Kenyan cabin featured in WoI.
4) Chelsea is back in town and we're already making great life choices together. Crop tops are so hot right now.
5) Is there anything better than waking up and remembering you purchased all the ingredients for a wonderful brunch at the farmer's market? Scrambled eggs with cheddar and chives plus some pan-fried potatoes...yum!

IT TAKES TANGERINE TO TANGO

2.01.2012

Time for some makeover madness! I've synergized my orangespiration with my decorating-with-candles mania here, and crossed it with my overarching love for all things shiny to bring you this post. It all started with the sidetable, which I got on sale for $15 at Urban Outfitters. (It was originally $148!) It's color was something akin to tapioca, which is just so not hot right now - crisis. I picked up a can of spraypaint at my local hardware store and set about revamping this little number in a delicious shade of tangerine, the Pantone "Color of the Year." (View some more tangerine-spiration at Apartment Therapy.)

Considering the fact that I've not only done this before, but photodocumented the entire process, you would think I couldn't screw up...so I even sort of surprised myself when I forgot to prime the thing. It is, in the words of Cher Horowitz, a Monet now - pretty from a distance, but a bit of a mess up close.

In other life lessons: this candle. I bought it because it's just soooo cute, but then, you know what? I don't think I love the way it smells so much and sometimes I think I can't even smell it at all! Oh, well, I still like the look of it. In this post: flowers from Hedge, candle from O'Suzannah, Foo dog from the Consignment Shop on the downtown mall.

MY BLUEBERRY KNIT

1.03.2012

I looove my new sweater, although this outfit makes me look a bit like the lovechild of Chloe Sevigny and Freddy Krueger. Dressed as John Lennon. Ironically. I was going more for "Erin Wasson's imaginary band groupie," but I'll roll with the punches.

The sweater is 100% wool and the tag simply says, "handmade by Linda." I couldn't resist its oversized waffle-knit spell the other weekend when I stopped by Low, where co-owner Jessica and I decided it looks just Henrik Vibskov-y enough to work. I also picked up the pendant at Low - it's an antique Ethiopian Christian symbol that looks just lovely against that dramatic swath of chest hair, no? (Details, people!)

SOMETHING ABOUT SUITING

Apologies for the brief radio silence. I finally got the blog to a place where I don't need to post every single day for more than just my mother to drop by, so I'm slowing down the publishing schedule to make content as awesome as possible. Not that it isn't always simply captivating.

Fashion show! Fashion show! Fashion show at lunch! That's literally what you're looking at here, thanks to my friend and impromptu photographer, Celeste. I tore apart my apartment last night trying to assemble something work-appropriate and chill-ready (most of my fall wardrobe is still stashed at home, le sadface) and came up with what's as close to a suit as I'll ever wear. And I swear I'm not that photoshopped...I just turned up the exposure on my camera so it would blow out all of my imperfections. Foresight!

I picked up this teesh last night at Urban Outfitters for $2.50 (like, for total seriousness!) and another one in heathered sage. It's size XL, which brings me to point one I that want to make with this outfit: How to wear a t-shirt. My old formula: buy it tight, hope your nipples get hard at some point to draw attention to where your pecs should be. New formula: buy it oversized and drape the sh*t out of it. First, tuck a lower corner of the shirt into your waistband and artfully let it sag (I find it helps to twist one corner a little bit). Next, roll up the sleeves. Et voilà! XL is the new XS. (For further draping inspiration, Google image search Haider Ackermann.)

Point two I want to make: Mix black & brown! They're both neutrals. They look great together. The end.

Also, I just got these pants back from my tailor and I love them - maybe point three is "embrace pleats." Okay, goodbye for tonight, endless bisous~~
